Mocs Capture 2008 SoCon Men’s Golf Championship UT Chattanooga Men's Golf
4-22-2008:
FLORENCE, S.C.--- Coming off its school record-tying fourth title this season, No. 12 Chattanooga set its sights on defending its championship at the 2008 Southern Conference Championship. Chattanooga got off to a great start and then held on to defend its 2007 title at the Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. The Mocs shot a final round 294 (+6) to finish at 865 (+1), eight strokes ahead of runner-up College of Charleston.

“It was not the prettiest win, but I’ll take it,” said Head Coach Mark Guhne. “We got off to a good start and then held on. It was not easy, but golf seldom is. I’m proud of the effort.

“Anytime you are considered the best in your conference, it is a great statement about your program,” added Guhne.

Finlinson Wows Fans At Augusta Jeana Finlinson
4-14-2008:
AUGUSTA, GA.--- When Duramed FUTURES Tour player Jeana Finlinson’s sponsor told her she would be hitting a shot with fellow Indianan Fuzzy Zoeller during the Wednesday practice round at The Masters, she could barely believe her ears. But when she perfectly stroked her shot and the grandstands erupted with cheers, the rookie was reminded of why she is pursuing a career as a touring pro.

“As soon as it hit the clubface, it just felt perfect,” said Finlinson, 27, of Bloomington, Ind., whose photo was captured at the top of her swing in the New York Times sports section on April 10. “The ball hit the green, stopped four feet right of the pin and the crowd went crazy. I guess that’s why you work with a sports psychologist and hit lots of golf shots – to not be surprised when things like that happen.”

Of course, the minute that Finlinson learned that her sponsor bought the opportunity for her to hit a tee shot with Zoeller during a charity auction for “Jill’s House,” [www.jills-house.org], the rookie began preparing for the big day at Augusta National. She knew she would hit a tee shot with Zoeller on the famed 12th hole – a picturesque 155-yard, par-3 hole named Golden Bell in the middle of “Amen Corner” and surrounded by Rae’s Creek. She also knew she would be swinging a club in front of more people than she had ever encountered on a golf course.

Blaum Wins Rain Shortened Event NGA Hooters Pro Golf Tour
4-22-2008:
LAKE MARY, FL--- Rain and lightning forced Hooters Tour officials to suspend play Sunday afternoon and ultimately declare 3rd round leader Ryan Blaum the winner of the weather shortened 54 hole event.

Blaum, the 2005 & 2006 ACC Player of the Year from Duke finished 15 under for the week; 3 shots better than Derek Lamely, and 4 better than the trio of Rob Johnson, David Miller and Will Claxton.

“I’ve been hitting the ball really well,” said Blaum, who finished T-15 at the PGA Tour event in Puerto Rico 3 weeks ago. “My driver has been really working for me, and with the tight fairways out here that was a big advantage.”

Blaum collects $33,565 for his 2nd career Hooters Tour win, and 3rd overall as a professional.

Cho-Hunicke Earns Suncoast Tour Victory Number Three Jeanne Cho-Hunicke
4-3-2008:
CASSELBERRY, FL.--- The SunCoast Series wrapped up the first of a two event series today at the Country Club of Deer Run in Casselberry, Florida with a familiar face claiming the crown as champion this week. Jeanne Cho-Hunicke (Longwood, FL) earned her third SunCoast Series Title with rounds of 68-71-71=210 to finish at six under par for the tournament.

"I played pretty solid this week. I struck the ball well and managed to keep it in play and that allowed me to hit greens and I made the putts."

In addition to the first place check Jeanne earns her second RIFE Bonus by using her RIFE Aussie putter to roll to victory this week.

Jeanne's six under par total gives her a seven shot victory over Thailand's Virada Nirapathpongporn and Bracebridge, Canada's Erin Thorne who will share second place this week finishing one over par for the tournament. Tokyo, Japan's Hiroko Fujishima and amateur Nara Shin tie for fourth at six over par for the tournament.

The SunCoast Series returns to action next week with the beautiful Country Club of Mount Dora hosting the series. Round one is scheduled to begin at 10:00 Tuesday morning

Hodge Earns Second Golfer of the Week Honor Jonathan Hodge
4-2-2008:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--- Jonathan Hodge was named Southern Conference Golfer of the Week as announced Wednesday by the conference office. It is the second such award for Hodge this season (Mar. 12) and back-to-back for the Mocs as Ben Rickett was honored a week ago.

Hodge, a junior from Jefferson City, Tenn., won the Furman Intercollegiate over the weekend shooting a three-under par 213 for the 54-hole event. He is now ranked No. 22 in the Golfstat Cup and No. 31 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings Index.

With the win at the Furman Intercollegiate, Hodge set a new school for wins in a season with three. That total also ties him with former teammate Bryce Ledford for most career wins with the Mocs.

Chattanooga, now ranked No. 12 in Golfweek, returns to action April 7-8 at the Bank of America Intercollegiate hosted by Ole Miss at the Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison,

Sophomore Campos concludes play at PGA Tour Event Rafael Campos
3-26-2008:
RIO GRANDE , Puerto Rico—Though he made the 36-hole cut, Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore golfer Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) will not get a chance to compete for a championship at the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open at Trump International Golf Club.

A total of 81 players made the 36-hole cut, which came at even-par 144. Current PGA Tour policy states that if more than 79 professionals make the cut, then a 54-hole cut will be implemented with the low 70 scores advancing to Sunday play. A total of 75 players made the 54-hole cut, which came at 1-over-par 217. Those six players who did not make the cut will be paid according to their standing after 54 holes. Campos, the lone amateur to make the cut, will not receive compensation.

Campos beat former U.S. Open champion Tom Kite and former British Open champion Tom Lehman to make the 36-hole cut. He was on the outside looking in, however, after 54 holes. After shooting back-to-back rounds of 72 (E) on the first two days, Campos shot a 75 (+3) on Saturday. Campos was one of four players from Puerto Rico to compete this weekend.

"I thought he played really solid the first two days of the tournament," VCU head coach Matt Ball said. "I think he'd tell you today that he wasn't hitting the ball as well. This was his first tour event and he's just a sophomore in college. When you look at some of the guys he beat, they're some of the best players in the world. All you can say is, Wow."

Campos will rejoin his teammates next week for the Shocker Classic in Wichita, Kan. The Rams open the two-day tournament Mar. 31.

"We've had some former VCU players compete in tour events, but this is the first time we've had a VCU golfer compete in a PGA event while he's still enrolled," Ball said. "He's got a ton of talent to compete at that level. We hope this will be a learning experience for him and he can use this experience to become as a dominant player on the college level. We're proud of him. We hope he comes back strong and competes well for us at Wichita."

Nadeau named CAA Men's go-golfer of the week Vincent Nadeau
3-26-2008:
RICHMOND, Va.—Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore Vincent Nadeau (Penn Hook, Va.) was named CAA Men’s Co-Golfer of the Week. Nadeau shared the honor with William & Mary’s Brandon Parker.

Nadeau led the Rams to a fifth-place finish at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The sophomore improved his score each day, shooting 75-72-71 – 218 (+2). The Purdue transfer finished the three-day event with 15 birdies. Nadeau was the only top-10 finisher who did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament last year.

As a team, the Rams shot a three-day total of 898 (303-300-295) to finish fifth in the 19-team event. VCU played the tournament without Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), who was competing on a sponsors’ exemption in the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour.

After a 12-day layoff, the Rams resume competition Monday, Mar. 31 at the two-day Shocker Classic in Wichita, Kan.

Hodge named SoCon player of the week:
Leads Team to wire-to-wire victory at the Palmetto Intercollegiate Classic
Jonathan Hodge Mocs Men's Golf Team
3-13-2008:
SPARTANBURG, S.C.---Chattanooga junior golfer, and Dr. Bob disciple, Jonathan Hodge earned his first Southern Conference Player of the Week announced by the conference office Wednesday. It is the first such honor for the 17th-ranked Mocs this spring and comes on the heels of a championship at the Palmetto Intercollegiate.

"Jonathan keyed a great team effort at the Palmetto," said Head Coach Mark Guhne. "To beat two top 30 teams by 30 and 40 shots is impressive."

Hodge was the individual medalist at the Palmetto Intercollegiate with a three-round total of 212 (+2). His final round of 67 (-3) was low round for the tournament and tied for his low round of 2007-08, although the other two were five-under par efforts. The Mocs bested No. 22 Penn State by 40 shots and No. 30 Virginia Tech, tournament runner-up, by 30.

It was Hodge's 43rd par or better round of his career which sets a new school record previously held by former teammate Bryce Ledford (2004-07). The medalist honors made him just the third Chattanooga player to win multiple tournaments for his career joining Ledford (3) and Matt Brock (2001-04, 2).

Hodge is currently No. 61 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings Index.

Dr. Bob Endorses 2Targets 2Targets Dr. Bob focusing Dr. Bob
3-10-2008:

Based on Dr. Bob's many years of sports vision and sport psychology training and experience he has entered into an endorsement arrangement with 2Targets, Inc.

Dr Bob says, "The Putt 2 will help golfers of all talent levels: For one, I like the portability and easy storage. This will provide every golfer their own target hole on a busy putting or chipping green. They can easily fit in the smallest of carry bags without adding excessive weight.

Also, I like that they are a bit smaller in visual perspective than an actual putting cup (2 inches versus 4.25 inches). By having a smaller visual target, it creates a perceptual image of the hole being much larger when you go to the golf course after practicing with the Putt 2.

But mainly, I really like the definitive shape and the ability to see the target projecting above ground level. On a sports vision perspective, the cone shape is much easier to see than a tee or group of tees and the Number 2 on the cone helps you center your attention and focus much in the same way that a pitcher focuses on the catcher's mitt while pitching to a batter. The smaller and more defined the focus, the tighter the dispersion pattern of makes and misses.

I have seen a number of great teaching and learning devices, but the Putt 2 is one that I like because of the ease of use and the simplicity of learning how to focus on a specific and definitive target. The transfer effect of having a strong visual memory of where the cup is located is definitely reinforced by the consistent use of the Putt 2.

I can readily say that I give it to my players to use, because I use it myself!"

Career-Day Earns Round of the Week Honors for Dr. Bob student Rafael Campos
3-5-2008:

RICHMOND, Va.—It took Virginia Commonwealth University men's golfer Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) just six holes to produce the collegiate round of the week. Campos earned the honor from Golfweek Magazine after firing a 65 (-7) on the first day of the Ron Smith USF Invitational in Dade City, Fla.

Campos was even through 12 holes at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club. The sophomore then ripped off five birdies and an eagle over the final six holes to finish the round seven under par.

"I just wanted to finish strong, after I got those first three birdies, I just kept thinking I need to get it on the green. I was rolling it pretty well that day, so I thought if I could put it on the green, I'd be fine....I knew what was going on, but I did not want my emotions to take over."

Campos finished the tournament with a three-day score of 216 (E) to finish 12th. VCU finished eighth in the 18-team event.

Both Campos and the team have been working with Dr. Bob for the last three months.
